FALX offers an automated shut down on demand system for wind turbines. This systems is designed to support owners and operators in their efforts to protect critical avifaunal life on their facilities through the application of advanced machine learning technologies.
The effective integration of an automated SDOD system allows wind farm operators to automatically shut wind turbines under specific conditions to protect critical bird species. This technology provides a unique opportunity to enhance the balance between wind energy development and conservation.
The system is built using the GPS tracking data from the species concerned from around your facility. We also make use of your met-mast data or other available weather data.
We build AI and ML models using this data and input from some of South Africa’s leading avifaunal specialists. These models provide you the likelihood of risk flights taking place.
Our integrations specialists deploy our automated SDOD system on your facility, integrating with your existing SCADA, working alongside your technical team. The system can be integrated with most existing SCADAs.
Turbines are automatically shut down if the likelihood of risk flight reaches the intolerable threshold advised by the avifaunal specialist. The system logs the curtailment of the turbines for reporting and monitoring.

What species does the automated SDOD system cover?
The system can be built for any species where there is available GPS tracking data for your facility. It will be determine for that species if there is a strong enough relationship between their flight patterns and site/weather conditions. It has been seen during recent studies on Verreaux Eagles for example that the relationship is significant.
What is used to determine whether or not to shut the turbines?
The machine learning models are trained on the thousands of previous flights, identifying the combinations of site conditions under which these risk flights took place. When these combinations of site conditions re-emerge to a degree that the probability is such that the defined threshold is crossed the turbines are curtailed.
Does the system track what conditions allowed for the threshold to be crossed?
Yes, for each curtailment trigger the site conditions associated with the curtailment are stored
Is there a user interface for the system?
Yes, an interactive user interface is included in your package. It shows you previous curtailments as well as a forecasted view of what the upcoming 24-hours looks like.
How are forecasts generated for SDOD?
We use best in class global weather models to forecast the expected SDOD, this can be used to alert observers during high risk times. However, actual site conditions are used to determine whether or not the turbines are curtailed.
Does the system integrate with the power generation forecasting for the facility?
If you are a subscriber to FALX P-ZERØ power generation forecasting system then the forecasted automated SDOD impact will be incorporated into your expected power forecasts to mitigate the effects of these on forecast penalties.
Is FALX willing to integrate via API with our facility?
Yes, API is our preferred method of integration
What methods of integration does FALX offer?
Modbus TCP/IP, OPC, DNP3
Who is Meteomatics?
Meteomatics is our weather forecasting partner, renowned for their high-resolution weather forecasts. They are experts in meteorological modelling and provide detailed forecasts with a spatial resolution of up to 90 metres and temporal resolution of up to 5 minutes. These precise weather forecasts are crucial inputs for our ML systems, ensuring the highest accuracy in energy generation predictions.
How do we charge for FALX P-ZERØ?
The cost structure includes a non-recurring development fee covering data ingestion, model building, deployment and integration, followed by subscription-based billing post-deployment. Pricing depends on the level of automation, resolution of the forecasts, and frequency of the updates.
What other products and services does FALX offer?
FALX offers several other products and services, including:
